Maple syrup is one of Canada’s most iconic sweet treats, loved for its unique flavour and natural origin. However,...
Main products grown in Canada
Whatever the country, agriculture is one of the pillars of the national economy. The same is true for Canada, where agriculture plays a very important role. True, only 7 % of the country's land area is used for cultivation, but that does not hinder Canada's productivity. Indeed, thousands of products are grown there every year, including corn, canola and fruit.
What can be said about the agricultural sector in Canada?
Agriculture is an important industry in Canada. Many people are employed there every year. It is thanks to agriculture that industries can have all the resources necessary for their development (processing and food production).
Canada's agricultural products are very diverse, for example: vegetables, canola, Maple syrup or corn. Moreover, it should be noted that this country is one of the leading agricultural producers in the world.
Currently, agriculture in Canada is undergoing great change, particularly with the help of the many innovative solutions adopted by farmers (practical and functional machines, modern cultivation techniques, etc.).
Only a tiny fraction of Canada is cultivable and the majority of this fraction is found in the western part of the country. One can find different types of farms there, catering to the needs of local industries and also used for exports.
In addition, farmers are currently under great pressure in food production. Not only do they have to maintain the quality of the soil, but they also have to know how to adapt to climate change.
Canada and the cultivation of corn
Corn is one of the most consumed cereals around the world, especially in Canada. You will therefore not be surprised to see across the meadows, fields covered with this golden wheat. Every year, the country produces thousands of tons of maize and currently ranks 11th in terms of world production in 2011.
Canadian farmers grow three major varieties of corn to meet both individual and industrial needs: grain corn, silage corn and sweet corn. Among these diversities, grain maize is the most widely cultivated, the area of which is grown in particular in the center of the country. This is mainly due to the climate which is warmer there and therefore perfectly suited to cultivation. In any case, we can conclude that corn is a real traditional crop unique to Canada. Its cultivation took place as early as the First Nations before being taken over by European farmers who occupied the country at a certain time.
Canola production
Canola is a cool-season oilseed crop in temperate Canada. Belonging to the Brassicae family, this plant takes its name from the derivative of “Canada” and “Ola” which means oil. For years, canola production has been a driving force in the Canadian economy. In 2011 alone, canola was grown on over 7 million hectares.
Canola supply and demand
The demand for canola is growing rapidly due to its many uses. This commodity is transformed into both food and industrial products. Canola is an abundant resource in nutritional values. It contains among others 22 % of proteins. Because of its many attributes, this oilseed is highly prized by the food industry for the manufacture of cooking and frying oil, margarine and many other derivatives.
What about fruit production in Canada?
Fruit is an important part of production in Canada. Despite the growing seasons which are quite short, it is observed that farmers devote themselves to the cultivation of a wide variety of fruits such as tender fruits (pears, peaches, plums, nectarines, cherries and prunes), grapes, apples, raspberries, strawberries, cranberries or blueberries.
In Canada, blueberries are the most widely grown fruit each year. Moreover, thousands of hectares of land are entirely devoted to it, making Canada the second largest producer in the world after the United States. The country stands out for its production methods which are particularly modern, allowing the cultivation of two types of blueberries: lowbush blueberries or wild blueberries and highbush blueberries. The harvest of these two varieties is done from at the end of the summer and goes until the beginning of the autumn.
Apples rank second in terms of fruit production in Canada. Faced with great competition on the market, apple production is increasing in quality and offers several varieties of apples like Honeycrisp and Ambrosia.
Grapes also have a place of honor in Canadian fruit production. For the past ten years, the production rate has increased considerably with the added bonus of superior quality. The city of Ontario is the most affected in this sector, as it provides more than 60 % national grape production.
Cranberries are also among the most widely grown fruits in Canada. As of 2020, this crop ranks second in terms of production volume and takes fourth place in terms of area under cultivation. Quebec City is the leading producer in the country with a rate of more than 60 % total cranberry production. Added to this is its worldwide reputation due to its position as the leading producer of organic cranberries.
